Sounds better in English to say:
A little exaggeration saves a ton of explanation
While I always thought Saki was French, it turns out (thanks Wikipedia!) that Saki was the pen name for Hector Hugh Monroe, a British writer who died in WWI.
Maybe the phrasing seems awkward because it was written about a hundred years ago? Although it reads fine to me.
